Digital radiography, sometimes known as a digital X-ray, is a contemporary form of radiography that uses digital sensors rather than photographic film, as in a conventional X-ray. The collected image is instantly converted to digital data and is accessible for inspection in a matter of seconds. The technology used in digital X-rays differs much from that of traditional X-rays, although the process itself is relatively similar. Instead of using photographic film to capture the image, digital sensors are used. Radiation bursts still enter the body and generate an image based on how much radiation passes through the various organs. Active matrix flat panels, including a detecting layer over an active matrix array of thin-film transistors and photodiodes, are the typical configuration for digital X-ray sensors.
