A process called noninvasive prenatal screening, or NIPT, is used to determine the risk that a fetus will be born with a certain genetic condition. This test looks at tiny pieces of DNA floating around in a pregnant woman's blood. Unlike most DNA, which is located inside a cell's nucleus, these fragments are free-floating and not contained within cells, hence the term "cell-free DNA." NIPT is considered noninvasive as only the expectant mother needs to have her blood taken and the fetus is not in danger. Since NIPT is a screening test, it cannot definitively identify a genetic condition in a fetus.
