Another name for digital radiography is direct digital radiography. The distinction between digital radiography and conventional radiography might be likened to that between contemporary digital cameras and outdated cameras that used films that needed to be developed in a darkroom. Filmless digital radiography enables instantaneous film acquisition, erasure, editing, and transfer to a computer system, which produces the image very instantly. There is little difference between digital and film radiography in terms of physical fundamentals. Digital radiography creates a digital image using digital detectors, which is then stored independently on a digital medium, in place of using film for image data detection and storage. The foundation of digital detection is the transformation of absorbed X-ray energy into electrical charge, which needs to be digitally represented in grayscale images to display the amount of absorbed X-ray energy at each location in the digital image. Software for processing images is used to create the final product. Image processing is used to enhance the quality of images by removing artifacts, lowering noise, and, if needed, boosting contrast.
